PST: Timbers offer managerial job to Porter

This would be fascinating news, because Caleb Porter has been one of the bright young coaching minds for a few years now.

Porter was working magic with unfancied University of Akron when offered the D.C. United position in December of 2009. He didn?t sense a good scene around RFK ? and that was surely the right call.

Curt Onalfo got the position, but DCU management became impatient; he lasted just more than eight months.

Porter was named U.S. under-23 coach later and charged with getting the young Americans into the 2012 Summer Olympics. That, as we know, didn?t work out. It was tough on Porter, no doubt.

Now comes news, first reported by The Oregonian, that Porter has been offered the Portland Timbers coaching position.

Good news for Timbers? fans?

I think so. The Olympic failure was undoubtedly a setback for the entire U.S. development initiative. It might have even been a little too much, too soon for Porter, who is just 37.

But he?s a wiser man and better coach for it. And you simply cannot discount what the man has done at Akron, a national power that has become one of the most reliable producers of top pro talent.
