Obama thanks troops who served in Iraq

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is thanking troops for their service as he marks the second anniversary of the end of combat operations in Iraq.

He says he'll work to ensure that soldiers remain well-equipped and he's promising to assist in their transition to civilian life.

In his weekly radio and Internet address Saturday, the president stuck to the message he conveyed Friday to troops in Fort Bliss, Texas. He said that as the nation turns from war "it's time to do some nation-building here at home."

Republican challenger Mitt Romney said nothing about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan when he addressed his party's national convention this past week.

Republican Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana used the weekly GOP address to praise American resilience in the face of Hurricane and Tropical Storm Isaac. He also reiterated Republican demands for extending Bush-era tax cuts.
