The Millions : The New Wave: On the State of Indian Fiction in America

In the fifth episode of the hit sitcom New Girl, a self-styled stud tries to impress an Indian-American woman by declaring that he loves India. When pressed for details, he stumbles his way through the following catalogue:

I love Slumdog. I love naan. I love pepper. I love Ben Kingsley, the stories of Rudyard Kipling. I have respect for cows, of course. I love the Taj Mahal, Deepak Chopra, anyone named Patel. I love monsoons. I love cobras in baskets?I love mango chutney, really, any type of chutney.

The point is clear: the average American?s knowledge of Indian culture is superficial, stereotypical, and offensive. Nevertheless, the mere existence of the joke ? and an Indian-American woman in a leading role on primetime TV ? confirms how much Indian culture has permeated American pop culture. This should not be surprising: With a population that increased to 2.8 million from 1.7 million between 2000 and 2010, Indians are one of the fastest growing ethnic groups in America. They may also be one of the fastest growing ethnic groups in literary fiction ? in America and the larger Anglophone world.

covercovercoverFiction written in English by authors of Indian descent has been critically acclaimed and commercially successful for decades. Now a new wave of talent has arrived: In 2012, the Indian-American writers Rajesh Parameswaran and Tania James published their debut short story collections ? I Am An Executioner: Love Stories and Aerogrammes, respectively ? while British-Indian author Hari Kunzru published his fourth novel, Gods Without Men: While it may be too soon for these authors to have achieved the heavyweight status of a Salman Rushdie or Jhumpa Lahiri, their imaginative, provocative, and well-crafted books suggest the continuation of a literary legacy and a move into ?post-post-colonial,? ?post-ethnic? territory.

covercoverParameswaran, James, and Kunzru inherit three decades of Anglo-Indian literary success. Rushdie?s magical realist novel Midnight?s Children, about a boy born on the precise moment of Indian Independence, won the Man Booker Prize, the U.K.?s most prestigious literary award. His most notorious novel The Satanic Verses earned Rushdie a death threat from Ayatollah Khomeini that sparked international controversy and massive sales, an experience upon which he reflects in his memoir Joseph Anton, recently excerpted in The New Yorker. In recent years, the Booker has gone to Arundati Roy?s novel The God of Small Things and Aravind Adiga?s novel The White Tiger, a hybrid of Invisible Man and Native Son set on the subcontinent. And as recently announced, the six authors shortlisted for the 2012 Booker includes Jeet Thayil, born in India, raised in Hong Kong, India and the U.S., and the author of the novel Narcopolis, about a 1970s opium den.

coverThe new wave is also indebted to Lahiri, who rocked the American lit establishment ? and book clubs nationwide ? with Interpreter of Maladies, an understated, pitch-perfect short story collection that captured the domestic dramas and existential malaise of upper class Indian Americans, mostly in bourgeois Boston. The book won the Pulitzer Prize and was followed by the novel, The Namesake, later a Mira Nair-directed movie, and Unaccustomed Earth, another stunning and more ambitious story collection that cemented Lahiri?s reputation as the marquee Indian-American fiction writer and a master of short fiction.

Beyond heritage, Parameswaran, Kunzru, and James have similar pedigrees. Parameswaran went to Yale for college and law school, Kunzru went to Oxford, and James went to college at Harvard and grad school at Columbia. (Rushdie went to Cambridge). Too old to be wunderkind, all are still young by literary standards: James is 31, Parameswaran is 40, and Kunzru is 43. And while they hail from Michigan and Texas, Kentucky, and London, all three now live in the New York area. Perhaps a brunch is in order?

True to their heritage, all three address issues of Indian identity. In the central storyline of Gods, an Indian-American man marries a Jewish-American woman and the incipient tensions in their marriage combust after their son disappears. In ?Ethnic Ken,? a story in Aerogrammes, an Indian-American girl plays with a brown-skinned version of Barbie?s boyfriend; the doll apparently cost half the price of the ?regular? Ken. In one of the many tragicomic stories in Executioner, an unemployed Indian computer salesman pretends to be a doctor ? the paradigmatic profession for high-status Indian Americans ? with ghastly consequences. In their treatment of ethnicity, all three books join Lahiri in a subgenre that one of James?s characters, an aspiring screenwriter, calls ?not quite Bollywood, not quite Hollywood: Indians in America or England Torn Between Identities.?

Nevertheless, all three authors transcend the stereotypical expectations of ?ethnic? fiction, including the notion that characters must share their author?s ethnicity.

Several stories in Executioner and Aerogrammes feature non-Indian characters. And the Indian-American protagonist in Gods shares a stage with non-Indians including an 18th-century Spaniard, a 19th-century Mormon, and a contemporary (Caucasian) British rock star. Even among the Indian characters, there is diversity: James?s Indian characters speak Malayalam, the language of the state of Kerala, Kunzru?s Indian characters speak Punjabi, spoken in northwestern India and eastern Pakistan, and Parameswaran?s titular executioner speaks in a parody of Indian-accented English: ?Normally in the life, people always marvel how I am maintaining cheerful demeanors.? Such simple differences may remind Western readers that India is a multi-ethnic, multi-religious, polyglot and internationally engaged country, not a monolithic, homogenous, insular place.

As if to distance themselves from ethnicity and nationality, all three authors experiment with non-human characters. The narrator of one story in Executioner is an elephant; another is a murderous, guilt-stricken tiger, a literal version of Adiga?s titular ?white tiger.? A story in Aerogrammes concerns a chimpanzee that nearly convinces a woman he is human. Strangest of all, Gods opens with a cryptic fable with characters named Cottontail Rabbit, Gila Monster, Southern Fox, and the protagonist Coyote, who sets up a meth lab in the desert. Take that, Kipling.

coverRegardless of species, all three books grapple with physical, emotional, and existential despair, albeit in different tones and moods. Gods is cerebral, somber, and grim. As he did in the reverse outsourcing fable Transmission, Kunzru assaults his characters until they break, and relents only after they have lost nearly everything. (For the film, perhaps Werner Herzog or P.T. Anderson could direct?) By contrast, Aerogrammes is sweet, sad, and painfully earnest. Characters are na?ve, blind, or delusional, whether it?s the Indian wrestlers who don?t realize the sport is supposed to be fake, or the boy who refuses accept his mother?s new husband. There?s pain suffering in Executioner, too but it?s often undercut by humor or an authorial wink, either implied or in meta-fictional parentheses or footnotes.

While Aerogrammes essentially falls into the category of realist fiction, Parameswaran and Kunzru flirt with other genres. Besides the two talking animal stories, Executioner includes a spy thriller, ?Narrative of Agent 974702,? and a science fiction tale, ?On the Banks of Table River (Planet Andromeda Galaxy, AD 2319).? Perhaps most fantastical ? yet paradoxically most credible ? is the cult at the center of Gods, a desert commune that fuses Christianity, Buddhism, New Age, and Alien Worship into an explosive whole. Then again, as Kunzru semi-subtly implies, such a group is not so different than the Europeans who Christianized Native Americans or Mormons who found Zion in the American West.

coverWhile fundamentally contemporary, all three books derive depth from history. In Executioner, the meta-fictional tale ?Four Rajeshes? concerns a railway clerk in colonial India at the turn of the 20th century and his version of Melville?s Bartleby, the Scrivener. The opening story in Aerogrammes features a pair of Indian wrestlers who arrive in England in 1910 to engage in literal and figurative battles with their colonial overlords. Perhaps because it is a novel, Gods is even more historically ambitious, with a storyline that spans more than 200 years. Ultimately, all three authors use history to transcend personal experience, shattering the expectation that ?ethnic? fiction must be autobiographical. In a way, they all respond to the question that Rushdie poses in Joseph Anton when recalling his inspiration for writing The Satanic Verses:

The great question of how the world joins up ? not only how the East flows into the West and the West into the East but how the past shapes the present even as the present changes our understanding of the past, and how the imagined world, the location of dreams, art, invention, and, yes, faith, sometimes leaks across the frontier separating it from the ?real? place in which human beings mistakenly believe they live.

In terms of style and structure, Aerogrammes is the most conventional of the three. The plainspoken prose obeys the aesthetic in which the writer?s voice is secondary to the story. The nine stories are more or less uniform length, each about 20 pages. Ultimately, James seems to value cohesion and consistency over shock and surprise. Parameswaran takes the opposite tack. His voice is always strong and varies widely from story to story; some seem like the work of different authors. If the books were Beatles albums, Aerogrammes would be Rubber Soul, the harmonious whole with songs of essentially equal weight, and Executioner would be The White Album, a hectic hodgepodge of competing voices. (Speaking of The Beatles, didn?t they help bring Indian music and spirituality into Western popular culture?)

Gods splits the difference between these two extremes. Like Executioner, it?s grandiose, sprawling, and dense. With its multiple points of view, multiple settings, and non-linear structure, it often reads like a collection of loosely linked stories. Some plots literally converge; others merely inform each other. Yet over 369 pages, Kunzru maintains cohesion. Part of this may stem from his use of the close third person point of view (which James does in most of her stories). It may also be a matter of experience; perhaps on their fourth books, James and Parameswaran may find a similar balance of ambition and unity.

For all the merits of these books, the question remains: is this literary boomlet an anomaly, a coincidence, or a harbinger? Will these books be a curiosity or a gateway to wider American interest in Indian culture? Will more Indian Americans join Govs. Bobby Jindal and Nikki Haley as high-profile politicians? Will we see more Indians Americans in popular entertainment: TV, movies, sports?

In a poignant scene in Interpreter of Maladies that sums up the cultural barriers at the heart of the book, an American woman tries to buy Hot Mix, an Indian snack. The Indian clerk dismisses her with four words: ?Too spicy for you.? Perhaps one day, that scene will seem outmoded, if not unfathomable.

Using Autoresponders to Automate your Business and Career ...

As a musician? there?s one thing you want to do? play your music. While you know it?s vital to your success, you simply don?t want to spend your time doing mundane tasks. Truth is, it takes a lot of time to run a business; and since time is money, the less time we spend doing the simple takes, the more time we will have to increase our income or to spend on our leisure time activities. Fortunately, many simple tasks can be automated, especially if your business model is an online business. An autoresponder is one of the most popular website automation tools, used to promote products and services or to keep in touch with your customers and fans. It is so simple to use that anyone can do it? you simply create a few messages,?then cut and paste these into your autoresponder program. When someone clicks on your link, or sends an email to the autoresponder address, the correct, timely response will be ?automatically? generated. The autoresponder can also be used to send out receipts, grant customer access (with login information), deliver information that has been purchased from your website and to send a ?thank you? message when a purchase has been made and informing them of similar or related products or services that they may be interested. The beauty of this is? that while all of this ordering is going on, and these important customer service emails are being sent, you can be off playing your heart out in front of a bunch of delirious fans! The more automation you can integrate into your online business, the better off you will be. I?m sure you can see how using an autoresponder can help your own music business. Your fans will get constant updates on your music, your tours and new releases. They?ll love you all the more for staying in touch. And you?ll have more time to be the star. It?s a win-win situation. There are two main decisions to be made when integrating autoresponders into your marketing plan 1) you may install your own software or, 2) you may use the services of sites such as aweber or getresponse. For most people, the second option is better. There are several reasons this is the better choice, primarily because the autoresponder services are inexpensive?they are not blocked by spambots and they?re easy to use.Whichever method you use? you really should make implementing autoresponders a priority for your website. It will increase your customer base and keep them coming back for more.

Bone health supplements - The saviour for a busy lifestyle

We often neglect maintaining the quality of our health. Just having good health is not enough. We need strong bones, bone density, optimal bone mass and bone renewal. These are all areas that one must not neglect. Apart from proteins, minerals, vitamin D and vitamins we should also take care of nutritional elements that take care of our bones. Thanks to the progress in the field of science we now have the option of taking bone health supplements.

While taking bone health supplements make sure you keep these in mind. Food is the best source of calcium ultimately. Bone health supplements are just another option when we find no time to bother about whether our food has calcium or not. Absorption of these supplements is better when taken with food or soon after a meal. Also make sure you take the amount that has been prescribed by your healthcare provider. Your body can only absorb a limited amount of calcium.

Make sure you take bone health supplements with food because they are best absorbed when taken with food. Choose calcium citrate in case, it is not possible to take it with food. Also taking purified bone health supplements is of utmost importance. Avoid supplements that are made from unrefined oysters or bone meal that are not branded because they may contain high levels of lead or other toxic metals. One should also be aware of the fact that bone or joint pain supplements come with their share of side effects. Some people might not be able to digest it itself. Also check with drug reactions and consult your health care provider for the same. Sometimes some bone health supplements can interfere with other medications and vitamins you?re taking. Also don?t take anything on an empty stomach because it can really be harmful.

Similar is the case when it comes to taking joint pain supplements. A lot of care needs to be taken. There might be more than 350 causes of joint pain. It could be injury or a disease. The most common form of joint pain is osteoarthritis, which affects many people in the world. Even younger people are facing this issue. There are many joint pain supplements in the market that can be taken for joint pain. Some help the formation while some help in repair. A few others help in lubricating and cushioning damaged joints. All of this thereby relieves inflammation and the pain in joints. All adults must exercise regularly and eat a balanced diet to keep bones and joints healthy. The most common joint pain supplements and bone health supplements are glucosamine, chondroitin and omega-3 fish oil, such as cod liver oil.

So all you need to do is be careful while taking these supplements. Only the reliable ones must be taken with care or else you will end up doing more damage to your health than good. Nonetheless, their popularity is still on the rise since they are the fastest way to consume nutrition than cook nutritious food. Who has the time anyway?

Welcome to Motherhood | Joy in this Journey

This is the first of a special week-long series I?m calling ?Welcome to Motherhood.? It is the story of meeting our firstborn and through her, the staff at Children?s Hospital. I will post two installments per day, the first at 7am and the second sometime between 1 and 3pm (eastern), through Friday.?

I remember telling my coworkers that my pregnancy had been so uneventful that I was sure this child was going to make up for it later. ?He or she will probably be an awful teenager,? I speculated.

We opted not to find out whether the baby was a boy or a girl at the routine ultrasound. Only two things stand out in my memory of that ultrasound, how difficult it was for me to make out body parts in the flickering black and white images on the screen, and how hard the technician tried to get one specific picture ? a cross-section of the aorta and the pulmonary artery. She wanted to catch these two vessels at the point where they cross one another ? you can see both at the same time in what looks like a figure-8. But the baby wiggled a lot and the technician didn?t seem to think it was a big problem that she couldn?t get the picture. I took her word for it and went on my merry way.

I went into labor on February 26. I was only 38 weeks along and didn?t believe I was really in labor until I got up to the use the bathroom and found blood. As soon as I got back into our room to wake up Scott, my water broke in a gush all over the floor. We arrived at the hospital an hour or so later, me still nonchalant about the whole thing. It was my first, and I figured I still had hours to go. The nurses were nonchalant too, until they checked me and discovered I was 8cm dilated.

My room exploded with energy as people ran to get delivery gear, call the doctor, and prep the room. I hit transition within minutes and the next ten minutes or so is a blur of pain, trying different positions, and bristling at the nurses who kept telling me not to close my eyes. I remember looking up at one point and seeing a semi-circle of people standing around the room, maybe a dozen, and thinking how odd it was that I didn?t even care that I was naked and surrounded by strangers. Then the pushing, the doctor arriving, our daughter being placed in my arms, and my entire body shivering uncontrollably under the blessed warmth of preheated blankets.

Elli minutes old

I remember feeling numb when I looked at her for the first time. I had expected this flood of love and emotion, but it didn?t feel that way at all. In a lot of ways, it was just as awkward as meeting your college roommate the day you move into the dorms as a freshman. I knew we were going to live a lot of life together, but I didn?t know her at all and didn?t know what to say or how to be. Only times 100, because I was her MOTHER and she was my DAUGHTER and shouldn?t there be rainbows and symphonies and rays of sunshine in that moment?

We named her Elli Renee, which means ?Light Reborn.? Her first APGAR score was low, but after some blow-by oxygen, her second score was normal. Scott gave Elli her first bath while I got stitched up and cleaned up.

I tried to nurse her, and our families came in to see her, and about an hour after she was born, a pediatrician came to examine her. I remember him listening to her heart, then asking to borrow a nurse?s stethoscope to listen again. He asked me to use my call button to ask for another stethoscope. After the third listen, he told us that our baby had a heart murmur. He ordered a chest x-ray and EKG, and said she would need to see the cardiologists at Children?s. We never got those test results, no cardiologist contacted us, some of the nurses could hear the murmur and some couldn?t, and we were discharged home, so I decided it must be one of those murmurs that resolves on its own. I remember telling myself that babies are born with heart murmurs all the time, and this doctor must be running up our hospital bill. (I guess I?ve always been a bit of a skeptic.)

Three days later, Leap Day, a nurse visited us at home. We told her Elli couldn?t stay awake to nurse. A weight check showed alarming loss. Elli?s skin was yellow down into her midsection from jaundice. ?You have to get her to a doctor today,? the nurse told us.

We took Elli to my family practitioner, who sent us the emergency department at Children?s. It was the last place I wanted to take my infant ? all the germs! I had the baby blues, I was exhausted from the delivery and waking up to try to feed Elli, and then we got lost on the way to the hospital. If the doctor hadn?t told us she had called the hospital to tell them we were coming, and if my husband hadn?t been with me, I might have turned around and taken Elli home. Thank God for my husband. If I?d gone home with Elli, she would have died in our apartment that night.

Check back after 1pm for Part Two.

Life Sciences and IT Investing: More Like Nuts and Gum than ...

PEHub is reporting that limited partners are putting more resources into life sciences all of a sudden. The article is low on details but says several funds in the $200 million to $400 million size are being raised right now. I know most of our audience doesn?t care much about life sciences ? although you could argue anyone susceptible to death, disease, or aging (read: All of us, even you, Larry Ellison) should.

But the mini-trend is interesting in what it says about IT investing: absolutely nothing.

Typically there?s a resurgence in life sciences whenever IT investments slump. But I don?t think that?s the case this time. For one thing, there?s no evidence we?re in a slump ? there are a bevy of conflicting data points on the health of the startup ecosystem. If anything, the most negative naysayers are concerned that we aren?t yet seeing the psychological ripple effects of disappointing IPOs make their way to the private company world.

That?s not to say that a correction won?t be coming for all those angel deals that can?t get a series A, the series A companies that haven?t gotten enough traction for a follow on round. And an overall crush of valuations when members of the 2011 $1 billion valuation club set out to raise another round. But said carnage isn?t here yet.

If you want evidence of disappointment in the consumer Web, look to the resurgence in enterprise deals instead. In the intervening years between the March 2000 NASDAQ crash and whatever this thing is that we?re in now, it has become clear that investing in life sciences and tech are utterly different animals ? more so today than ever.?Decades from now when we look back on the venture capital business, I think we?ll be surprised that life sciences and tech investments were ever done out of the same funds, through the same partnerships, and under the same roofs.

Two things have changed the businesses forever: The Internet and the playbook of big pharma.

Back in the days when Silicon Valley actually made, you know, Silicon, companies couldn?t go from idea to IPO at light speed. Tech IPOs, when they occurred, were small and companies grew the longer they were in the market. It was a totally different game. It?s similar to those opening weekend box office records that get gaudier and gaudier as the film business has changed, moving away from long runs based on reviews and word-of-mouth to huge opening weekend mega-plex pushes on as many screens as possible before the reviews come out. Far more screens and higher ticket prices are why there are such bigger opening box office weekends today ? not because the movies are any better. The film industry essentially hacked its way around reviews.

Similarly, the Internet hacked its way around the normal laws of building a tech company. It?s dramatically faster and cheaper to get a product into market, and the delivery is mostly direct to consumers, not shelves of stores or networks of distributors. But there?s a downside: It?s feast or famine. The days of the small IPO are gone, as most Internet companies go very, very big or sell quickly. When it comes to tech, venture capital has become even more of a home run business.

But it?s not just that the speed and size of the consumer Web has become more distinct from the long-time horizons and uncertainty of drug discovery. Life sciences, too, has changed in the last decade, pulling hard in the other direction. Amgen and Genentech were supposed to be the future for this field, the first two ? of many ? massive publicly traded drug discovery companies. But instead, the industry en masse opted to do the research equivalent of the acqui-hire: Rather than take on the risk of expensive clinical trials and uncertainty when it comes to the FDA and insurance coverage, biotech companies do licensing deals with big pharma early and often.

You can understand why. Consider Tysabri, a multiple sclerosis wonder drug that was expected to become a blockbuster until sales were suddenly suspended in 2005 with warning of new potential side effects. It took more than a year to come back on the market and has only recently won clearance to modify its label, which investors hope could double sales over the next year. This was a seven-year battle that could have murdered a small company like Elan, had it not partnered up with the giant Biogen to develop and market the drug together.

But with a decision to share the risk comes a decision to share the spoils. Elan may only now be able to reap the benefits for Tysabri ? and it only gets half of them.

There are few signs of this trend waning: VCs love it, because taking a small unprofitable biotech company public to fund ongoing research is all but impossible, and they aren?t going to carry it the whole way. Entrepreneurs love it, because they can get rewarded for initial discovery and don?t have to build out the testing, approval, and sales infrastructure from scratch. And big pharma really loves it, because they effectively outsource early drug research.

The picture for returns, when it comes to life sciences, couldn?t be more different than the consumer Web: No highs, but a steady track record with few lows either.

Investing in the two areas has always taken a different passion and knowledge base. But increasingly it?s just a completely different business with different risk profiles, investment expectations and fund cycles ? about as similar as private equity and venture capital. And as Web-focused venture firms fall under pressure to do seed programs and help with recruiting and other high touch services, the two will become even more distinct. (And some would argue cleantech is a third animal with its reliance on subsidies and long-lead market lead times.)

People will cite programs like the incubator RockHealth, funded by many IT investors, as evidence that there?s still some synergy there. But no one at RockHealth is doing medical devices or drug discovery. They?re building things like iPhone apps that sell into the healthcare world. That?s a tech investment that happens to be in the healthcare vertical, not a life sciences deal.

Firms still doing it under one roof will argue there?s instant diversification for LPs. But that?s the LPs? job. The synergies are getting harder and harder to see.

> Online Shopping > Discover the Benefits of Deal of the Day Sites

Deal of the day sites have been around since 2004 but some customers still may not know of their existence. Deals sites can save people money on everyday products and services. But before buying from one of these site, customers should do some research. Some deal sites offer legit deals while other sites claim that they are offering a deal in reality they are offering the deal at retail price.

During economic hard times, mostly everybody wants to spend less money on products and services that they need or want. This is necessitated by the fact that people should save money. Most of these websites are inexpensive as they offer products at relatively cheaper prices than other dealers. You may be lucky to get what you have been searching for in other places at these sites. Some websites will not even charge shipping fees.

Entrepreneurs who have strategies to make profits should know that these are the places to browse. You may make an investment in these areas to buy their cheap products then sell them to other customers and make your own profit. Some traders risk and venture into such businesses with an aim of meeting the need of their customers.

Another advantage of deal of the day sites is that they are interesting and enjoyable. Most people may discover some items which they have never thought existed in these pages. This causes customers to find this funny and get motivated to frequent their visits in such websites.

Being an online business adds value to this kind of shopping. This is because it is convenient in terms of time. Deal sites can be accessed at any time during the day or night. All individuals who have internet connection do not have to move from one store to another looking for such commodities. They just scroll the web from their computers. You can purchase from anywhere in the world.

Those customers who prefer gift ideas are given special opportunities by the dealers. Gifts for events such as birthdays or holidays are bought from here. Some refer their friends to these websites with an aim of getting such offers. You may use this opportunity to identify items of interest for the next purchase.

On the other hand, it is also worth to mention that deal of the day sites have some few disadvantages related to it. It promotes unnecessary expenditure. Those who lack self control may end up buying luxurious goods without considering their significance. Some individuals have become addicted to the internet and hence waste a lot of time buying useless items.

INTERSTATE RELOCATION ? WHO'S DOING IT? | South Jersey ...

Some very interesting points were raised in a recent review on Australian interstate relocation.

Did you know that each year since 2000/1, the state of Queensland has been the only state to experience a net interstate migration gain in each year, whilst South Australia has experience a net interstate migration loss.

And when it comes to moving interstate, young adults aged 20 ? 34 years made up 39% of all interstate movers.

This demographic prompted speculation by a leading interstate removal company, Fernandos Half Price Removals, that it?s the younger generation who are driving the growth in the affordable self-pack container removals industry.

They say that as a general rule, the younger generation is more likely to have cash flow pressures and are therefore more likely to be on the hunt for affordable, value-added solutions.? They say that the fact that so many younger people are moving interstate could be driving the growth in the cost-effective container removals industry.

Self-move options where the person moving does all the packing and unpacking of the container is significantly cheaper when it comes to interstate furniture removals.

Young adults may also be choosing container hire as their preferred interstate furniture removals mode because it offers a greater degree of flexibility.? People with young families and demanding jobs may find it easier to pack over several days, rather than have to take days off work to oversee someone else doing it.

When it comes to interstate relocation, three of Australia?s eastern states, namely Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria are the most popular destinations, with moves between these three states accounting for 47% of all interstate moves.? It?s not known what percentage of people use DIY self-pack container removals for their interstate relocation ? but it would be interesting to find out.? One thing we do know however, and that is that container hire is becoming the relocation option of choice when it comes to interstate furniture removals.

Walmart Gender Discrimination Lawsuit Allowed To Proceed, Judge Says

By Dan Levine
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept 21 (Reuters) - A U.S. judge rejected Wal-Mart Stores Inc's request to dismiss a gender discrimination case filed in California, but said he would rule later about whether the women plaintiffs had enough evidence to be certified as a class.
The ruling on Friday came from U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer in San Francisco federal court.
Plaintiffs alleging the world's largest retailer denied them pay raises and promotions because of their gender are regrouping after the U.S. Supreme Court last year dismantled a class of up to 1.5 million current and former Walmart workers.
The Walmart workers filed a reformulated lawsuit, saying they were confining their allegations to California. The new case could include several hundred thousand potential class members.
Walmart argued in part that the long history of the case, with over 10 years of litigation, warranted dismissal of the reformulated lawsuit.
But in his order on Friday, Breyer said he was not prepared to deny the plaintiffs an opportunity to present evidence.
Walmart attorney Theodore Boutrous Jr. said the company has a strong policy against discrimination, and that the claims are unsuitable for a class action.
"The purported statewide class the plaintiffs allege is no more appropriate today than the nationwide class the Supreme Court has already rejected," Boutrous said.
But Brad Seligman, an attorney for the plaintiffs, said the ruling vindicates a legal strategy of filing the reformulated lawsuit in the wake of the Supreme Court's opinion. A similar lawsuit was also filed against Walmart in Texas, and Seligman said there will soon be others.
"The Supreme Court's opinion rejected a case, it didn't reject every case," Seligman said.
The case in U.S. District Court, Northern District of California is Betty Dukes, Patricia Surgeson, Edith Arana, Deborah Gunter and Christine Kwapnoski, on behalf of themselves and all others similarly situated v. Wal-Mart Stores Inc, 01-2252.

Chicago strike reveals a broken system

The Chicago Teachers Union agreed on Tuesday to end its strike, allowing 350,000 students to return to classes on Wednesday and ending a tense standoff. However, the contract still requires ratification by the union's 26,000 members. NBC's Rehema Ellis reports.

By Rehema Ellis, NBC News Chief Education Correspondent

NEWS ANALYSIS?

CHICAGO ? Now that the Chicago teachers strike has ended, it is inevitable that people will try to figure out who won and who lost.?But more might be gained if we went beyond that.

What if more time were spent thinking about what students and the country gained from this strike, because it focused attention on the debate over teacher evaluations, the weight that is given to standardized tests and the growing demand for education reform?

Broken system
A lot has been said about the need to get rid of bad teachers and the union that protects them.?The truth is union leaders will tell you they don?t like bad teachers, either. But the union would argue that it?s not their job to weed out bad teachers. Rather, they say, school leaders should do a better job identifying bad teachers and weeding them out.

In Chicago, according to a 2009 report by the New Teachers Project, 91 percent of teachers were rated ?superior? or ?excellent??by school principals. Out of the nearly 30,000 teachers in the city public school system, only a small fraction received an ?unsatisfactory? rating. But with student achievement at such a low level, clearly something must be wrong with how the evaluations were being done.

So this is a good time to consider who?s responsible, in addition to teachers, for what happens in school. I spoke with several teachers on the picket line over the past few days who were concerned that they didn?t have books to start the school year.?Why isn?t everyone up in arms about that??

Other teachers told me that they were assigned to classrooms outside of their area of expertise.?One woman on the picket line told me she had taught English last year but she was trained to be a gym teacher.??I just tried to help out where there was a need,? she said.?

Biggest losers of Chicago's teachers strike? The students, critic says

Does anyone really believe she is the best English teacher for Chicago kids? ?

Should those students and that teacher be judged on how well she?s able to prepare them to take a standardized test?

And don?t think this is an isolated, one-of-a-kind situation.? It?s not.? You will find similar stories in schools all across this nation.

In Finland, where students far out perform American kids, they don?t take standardized tests at all. Students are measured by how well they do on their classroom work and drills.

There is a collective national will in Finland to educate all students, and there?s a plan to succeed. Finland starts by hiring the best and the brightest to teach.?Finnish teachers are required to have a master?s degree and teachers come from the top 10 percent of college graduates.?Compare that to the U.S., where 47 percent of America?s teachers come from the bottom third of their class, according to a 2010 McKinsey report.

Chicago teachers agree to end strike, classes to resume Wednesday

Big issue: poverty
Then there?s the issue of poverty and safety and how it affects teaching and learning.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel went to court this week seeking an injunction to force an end to the strike claiming, in part, the walkout was a threat to ?public health and safety.?

As many as 87 percent of the public school children come from low-income families, according to figures from Chicago Public Schools.???

More than 90 percent of them qualify for the free or reduced breakfast and lunch program.? For many, school is where they go, not just for an education, but for food.?

It?s also where many children go to feel safe in a city stricken by far too much violence.

The teachers hit the picket line demanding money, a fair evaluation system and job security but, they also wanted more social workers in the schools to help them help children who have been traumatized living in broken homes and broken neighborhoods.

According to the Chicago Public Schools Employee Roster, there are 382 social workers in the school district that serves 350,000 students.? If my math is correct, that amounts to about one social worker for every 916 students.?

?That means social workers are doing paper work because they don?t have time to do much of anything else,? said Lorraine Forte of Catalyst Chicago, an independent newsmagazine dedicated to reporting on urban education. ?

Education Nation: Get involved in our 2012 summit, Sept. 23-25

Not unique
Chicago?s school problems are not unique.? Poverty, crime and lack of resources affect schools all across the country.

Experts are quick to point out that none of these issues should be used as an excuse for failing to educate America?s children.?Teachers, city leaders, policy makers and education reform advocates all agree that these factors also shouldn?t be left out of the conversation. And in fact, they aren?t ? but real solutions need to be found.

Chicago has presented an opportunity for the nation to take a closer, more thoughtful look at a multitude of reasons why schools and test scores and graduation rates are lacking.? It might also inspire us to look at schools that are working to see if they could be replicated.?

That?s what we will be doing starting this Sunday when NBC launches its Third Annual Education Nation Summit.? But what?s wrong with America?s schools won?t be fixed if too much time is spent adding up winners and losers from one strike.

Jarre Aeroskull speaker dock packs dual 15-watt woofers, recently departed Apple Dock Connector

Jarre Aeroskull speaker dock packs dual 15watt woofers, recently departed Apple Dock Connector

Just in time for Halloween, Jarre's new Aeroskull dock embodies 70 watts of total power in a human-like cranium, complete with a pair of speaker-packing shades. Jarre is showing off the colorful chrome tune machine in black, white, blue, green, orange, pink, purple and yellow finishes, with a matching IR bone remote to boot. With a tinted lens appearance, the permanently affixed sunglasses actually contain two 15-watt speakers, with a 40-watt subwoofer occupying the skull's rear. The lofty £349 (about $565) sticker price will net you some of the latest technologies, including Bluetooth audio support and a standard 3.5mm audio input, but Apple's new Lightning port is notably absent, with a good-as-dead Dock Connector mounted up top, instead. With 70 watts of power and Jarre's backing, this seemingly bizarre rig may actually offer decent performance. You'll need to wait until its October ship date to see for yourself, but if a skeletal sound system is on your list of must-haves, you can rest in peace knowing that you have but weeks to live (with your current spirited setup).

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 will hit 5 US carriers by mid-November

Galaxy Note 2

Samsung has unveiled their U.S. release plans for the upcoming Galaxy Note 2, and things are looking very nice. The Note 2 will be on all five major U.S. carriers by mid-November, making this the second time Samsung was able to pull off a (mostly) simultaneous launch of the same model across the board.

We've seen the so-called international version of the Note 2, but what do we get here in the states? A beast, that's what.

  • 1.6 quad-core Exynos CPU
  • LTE and/or HSPA+42 where applicable
  • 2GB RAM
  • Android 4.1
  • 16GB storage
  • microSD card slot

That's not a typo -- the Note 2 will be the debut of the LTE optimized Exynos. I know more than a few have been waiting for that one. Of course this all sits under the 5.5-inch Super AMOLED HD screen an is backed up by that 3100mAh battery. Jelly Bean is an awesome bonus, and there's a chance that this will be the first phone on Verizon to offer it.

Of course the redesigned S-Pen and software optimizations are on-board, and the device will be available in Marble White or Titanium Grey, with flip-cover backs available in Titanium Gray, Marble White, Blue, Pink, Mint, Lime Green, and Orange. Full details from carriers will be coming soon, we'll keep an eye out for all the Note 2 news.

The full press release is after the break, and the Galaxy Note 2 forums are open for business!

Top 7 Ways to Promote Your Local Business

Advertising and marketing. Getting new customers. It?s what all businesses need to do. When business is slow and you?re looking for new customers what are your options? The list is long and the Internet adds even more ways to advertise and promote your business.

Common ways to advertise include the newspaper, the yellow pages, billboards, direct mail, radio, and TV. The Internet offers the ability to advertise on other websites. Examples include your local chamber of commerce, the local newspaper, and other local websites that might be seeing a lot of traffic. Still more Internet options are pay per click advertising which can include text, image, and video ads. There?s also email marketing and search optimization of your website.

For many businesses advertising is one of those many things that has to be done but is not given a lot of attention. It?s understandable because often times businesses, especially small ones have so many different things to handle. The business owner can?t be an expert in everything. So they agree with whatever advertising comes along. They do what everyone else is doing. They don?t put much thought into it.

Businesses often look at their competition and do what they do. If their closest competitor advertises in the newspaper they do it too. If their competitor is on the radio they better do that too.

Buy LocalBut how much thought is given to what works? A lot of money is spent on advertising. It?s a large part of many businesses budgets. But the return on investment is often unknown. Part of the reason is simply that it?s difficult to track some forms of advertising. Especially when multiple forms of advertising are in use at the same time. If a customer hears your ad on the radio 20 times and sees your newspaper ad 10 times even they don?t know which advertising media was responsible for acquiring their business.

Let?s go through 7 ways to promote a local business. I?ll make the assumption that the business is seeking customers who are local. This means the customers are physically located within about 50 miles of the business. Most businesses fall into this category.

1. Newspaper
Your local newspaper offers many options with a wide range of prices. Newspapers are still very popular. Many people still read newspapers and will see your ads. This can be a quick and effective method to bring in new leads and customers.

2. Yellow pages
The yellow pages are still being used, but because of the Internet, the hard copy form is not as popular as it once was. The yellow pages are online too. You can have your business listed in both the online and offline versions of the yellow pages. The online version is one of the many online business directories that exist. You can have your business listed in it for free or you can pay for a more detailed listing with added features. My recommendation about yellow pages is to use the free listing.

3. Radio and TV
Radio and TV are certainly effective but usually more expensive than other options. When you think of radio and TV you think of branding your business. Using repetition to get your business branded in the minds of people. But this can be expensive because it takes a lot of repetition to brand a business. You can still use TV and radio to advertise in a more direct response method rather than trying to do branding. This would be more effective and efficient. For example, rather than just trying to get people to remember your business name so that they hopefully do business with you at some point in the future, have your ads directly ask for action. Ask them to call or visit and give them an incentive to do so.

4. Direct mail
Using direct mail is sometimes thought to be outdated. The Internet is the new way to advertise right? Actually direct mail is as good as it ever was. It may be even better now since fewer people are using it because of the Internet. Using direct mail in the right way can be extremely effective. The key is to mail to the people most likely to respond and to have your mail express a clear offer with a clear call to action.

5. Networking and referrals
One of the most powerful ways to acquire a new customer is through a referral. Referrals can be guaranteed sales. They pass trust to you from the person referring you. Local business networking groups are an excellent way to get referrals. Certainly friends and relatives are good examples of people who can refer your business to their friends. Events held by your local chamber of commerce are loose networking events that can result in referrals for business. Don?t underestimate referral networking if you are looking for local customers.

6. Your Own Website and Online Directories
The Internet is another way to generate leads and customers. You don?t need a website because you can still have your business listed in online directories. Some of these directories include the yellow pages, the Google business directory (Google Places), the Yahoo business directory, the Bing business directory, Merchant Circle, Yelp, Four Square, City Pages, and more. There are hundreds of online directories. It?s wise to seek out directories that are relevant to your business. For example there are directories for women?s health so if your business is a women?s hair salon you could be listed there.

I mentioned that you don?t need a website, but it?s better to have one. A website strengthens your online presence and helps your other business listings rank higher in search results. It makes it easier for people to find your business when searching online. In most cases people expect businesses to have a website. It?s a sign of professionalism to have a website.

7. Pay per Click Advertising
Pay per Click advertising involves setting up ads that show online, that when clicked on, bring a visitor to your website. For local businesses seeking local customers Pay per Click advertising is challenging. It also has its advantages. If set up correctly you can use it to target a geographical area. That?s great for a local business! Your ads can be shown any time of day. You can put limits to how much you want to spend per click and per day. You can turn your ads on and off at any time. You can target people who are searching using specific search terms. You can get people who are ready to buy from you to come to your website! That?s very powerful.

The challenge with Pay per Click advertising for local businesses is that it?s difficult to get much activity. Especially if your local area has a low population. Part of making Pay per Click advertising work is testing. It?s hard to test and make good decisions when you don?t have much data to base those decisions on. However, if you can manage to organize your ads so that you?re getting good leads that result in customers you?ll have a great asset.

What you really need to know.
No matter what form of advertising you use there are a few things you must know. Your advertising won?t work and will be a waste of time and money if you don?t follow these tips.

1. You must aim your advertising at the right people. Aim it at your potential customers. Choosing the right advertising media helps.
2. You must catch the attention of those people you are advertising to.
3. Your advertising must include a call to action and a reason that someone should act.
4. Your advertising should not be confusing to its audience. It should be simple to understand.
5. Your advertising should not be the same as everyone else?s. It should stand out and be different.

When it comes to renovating or remodelling a home or office, you are left with last flooring option- concrete. This is because concrete tends to have a reputation of being gray, dull and drab. However, it is not always the same. You can find out polished and decorative concrete.

However, polished or decorative concrete flooring is dull but it adds classiness to any office and home.

Polished or decorative concrete is as same as natural stone and it offers you to make various changes to it such as stamping, staining, or epoxy coatings. On the other hand, decorative concrete is unbelievably elegant and unique.

Qualities of decorative concrete

Decorative concrete covers a wide range of procedures meant to improve the appearance of ideal concrete. This type of concrete comprises staining, polishing, epoxy coating and stamping. However, you do not need to worry discovering the various types of concrete flooring choices because none of the concrete procedures will pinch your pocket. Concrete is relatively inexpensive compared to similar looking marble and terrazzo flooring options. When it comes to buying large slabs for warehouse, factories and showrooms, you need to spend a large amount of money but whereas polished concrete is concerned, it is a more affordable choice.

Apart from providing affordability and elegance, it offers the facility of easy upkeep and maintenance. You can find it easy to clean the polished concrete. On the other hand, it is quite durable and it lasts for a long period. It is easily maintained since it has a smooth finish. It is greatly suitable for larger surfaces. You can opt for stamped concrete for smaller areas like bathrooms, kitchens, and entrance to homes. If you want to add different color to the concrete, then you can opt for color altering decorative concrete procedures. Acid staining is something that can offer a variety of colors to the decorative concrete. If you have your home or office in Edmonton, then you can take flooring services from commercial flooring Edmonton. They can offer you services as per your flooring requirement.

Other benefits of concrete flooring

You may need concrete flooring options for your new home or office, but you may be wondering to know what concrete flooring can be a good choice for your existing flooring. Do not worry because polished concrete is greatly versatile. While determining which aspect you want to achieve through concrete flooring, you can get to consider many things. If your objective is to enhance energy efficiency, you can choose a polished finish because it can better reflect overhead lights.

Regardless of what you possess an office or a home, talking to a flooring contractor is good thought when looking for a perfect option for your polished concrete flooring. If you want to bring changes to your home or facility, you can consult with the Decorative concrete Flooring Edmonton. They can best tell you about the finest course of action for altering the decorative concrete and its maintenance.

With this, you can save money and add beauty to your home or office.

New Leica M camera M10 has liveview and 1080p video capture, we go handson video

Yesterday, Canon stole the show, but today's darling of Photokina appears to be the just-announced Leica M camera. Show attendees flocked to the "new M" demo counter this morning, nudging through the crowd for a chance to check out Leica's first live-view equipped M. This new feature is powered by a new 24-megapixel CMOS sensor, and also enables 1080p video capture at 24 and 25 frames-per-second -- another first for Leica. Live-view and HD video shooting may not seem like banner features for a €6,200 (about $8,100) camera, but considering they've never been offered before, these additions seem to be highlights for hopeful M10 owners.

The camera itself is quite beastly, in typical M fashion, and appears to have just as much heft as the M9. There's a new Gorilla Glass-equipped 3-inch, 920k-dot display, that's plenty sharp and quite responsive in live-view mode. Adjacent to the display, you'll find a new LV button, which, as you may have guessed, launches the new realtime display mode. There's also a playback button, along with direct access to ISO, image deletion and menu settings. Up top, there's the Leica trademark shutter speed dial (aperture control is on the lens), letting you select from bulb all the way through 1/4000 second. There's a full-size hot shoe up top with an accessory connector for the EVF 2 attachment, and a second proprietary connector on the bottom to interface with the accessory grip, which adds USB connectivity and built-in GPS.

We can't comment on image quality just yet, but there's no question that the "new M" marks Leica's commitment to finally bring otherwise commonplace features to its popular (and pricey) rangefinder line. Look for this latest model to hit stores in early 2013, but you can take a closer look today in our hands-on gallery below and video demo after the break.

Update: This post originally stated that the new Leica M had yet to be named, however the company has confirmed that the new camera will simply be named, "The Leica M," without numbers. "The Leica M also marks the beginning of a new era in the Leica product naming policy. In [the] future, Leica M and S model names will omit the number suffix to emphasize the enduring and long-term significance of the respective systems."
