Origin EON17-S

Taking a page from the Alienware book of style, the Origin EON17-S ($3,499 list) has the look and feel of a high-end gaming laptop, and more importantly, it performs like one. Fueled by Intel's latest Extreme Edition Core i7-3920XM (Ivy Bridge) processor and an Nvidia GeForce GTX675M GPU, this 17-inch gamer turned in impressive benchmark scores and gave us over 2.5 hours of battery life, which is quite good for a laptop in this class. You'll have to shell out some big bucks for this notebook, and while its graphics performance is good it can't match the frame rates put out by our reigning Editors' Choice, the Alienware M18x ($4,529 direct, 4 stars).

Design and Features
The EON17-S has a decidedly Alienware-esque look to it. The lid is done up in a matte black rubbery finish reminiscent of last year's Alienware M17x ($2,254 direct, 4.5 stars). Of course instead of an illuminated alien head, it sports the Origin logo, a bright red O with a dot in the middle. Origin offers this model with a matte red or glossy silver finish as well. At 8.3 pounds, the EON17-S weighs the same as the MSI GT70-0NC-011US ($1,999.99 direct, 4 stars), and like most 17-inch gaming laptops, is big and bulky. Factor in the two-plus-pound power brick, and you've got close to 11 pounds of laptop to lug along to your next LAN party.

Beneath the lid sits a beautiful 17.3-inch full HD display framed by glossy black bezels. The screen delivers bright, bold colors with good viewing angles but the reflective glossy coating is mirror-like, particularly when a black background is being displayed. I much prefer a matte coating like the one used on the MSI GT70-0NC-011US. A webcam is embedded in the upper bezel and the Origin badge is affixed to the lower bezel.

The spacious keyboard deck offers a full size traditional style keyboard with three zone backlighting and seven color options to choose from. The keyboard not only looks cool but is also a pleasure to type on. The touchpad is smooth and responsive, and there's a fingerprint reader sandwiched between the two textured mouse buttons. Above the keyboard are two Onkyo speakers which, with the help of a 3-watt subwoofer, deliver a powerful wall of sound. You can customize and optimize your audio output with Creative's THX TruStudio Pro software (included) which offers Surround, Smart Volume, and Crystalizer settings.

There are plenty of ports scattered around the outside of the chassis. Along the left edge are three USB 3.0 ports, a mini-FireWire port, a LAN port, and a 9-in-1 card reader. The right side has four audio jacks (headphone and 7.1 channel surround-out) and a USB 2.0 port. There's an optical drive bay here that you can have outfitted with any type of CD/DVD/BD drive or an additional storage drive; our review unit was configured with a 1TB hard drive and came with an external USB Blu-ray drive. DisplayPort, HDMI, and DVI video ports are positioned on the rear of the chassis along with the power jack.

In addition to the 1TB storage drive, our EON17-S came with two 120GB solid-state drives set to RAID 0. It also has built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radios and is loaded with Windows 7 home Premium. Thankfully, there is no bloatware. Instead you get Cyberlink PowereDVD12 Ultra and a webcam utility. Origin covers the EON17-S with a one year parts and labor warranty and lifetime 24/7 technical support.

Performance
Origin EON17-s Origin engineers ratcheted the Intel Core i7-3920XM Extreme Edition clock speed up to 3.10GHz from its stock speed of 2.9GHz. Aided by 16GB of system RAM and a pair of SSD's in RAID 0, the EON17-S's PCMark 7 score was the highest we've seen from a laptop of any stripe, beating the Alienware M18x by more than 2,300 points and the Eurocom Leopard 2.0 ($3,606 direct, 4 stars) by 704 points. Likewise, the EON17-S took top honors on our Cinebench R11.5 test with a score of 7.29. The Eurocom scored 5.96 on this CPU-intensive test and the M18x scored 6.52 points. The over-clocked processor and memory combo helped earn the EON17-S top scores on our Handbrake (1:01) and Photoshop CS5 (2:27) multimedia tests as well.

Origin EON17-s

Like any gaming notebook worth its salt the EON17-S features a beefy GPU; it uses Nvidia's new GeForce GTX 685M graphics controller, which like the Core i7 processor, is over-clocked for enhanced performance. On our 3DMark 11 (DX11) Extreme test its score of 1,145 trumped the less expensive MSI GT783 (1,056) and GT70 (963) notebooks but fell way short of the more expensive M18x (2,024) and Leopard 2.0 (2,199), both of which use dual GPUs. Results were similar on our Lost Planet 2 DX11 test; the EON17-S managed a very playable 32.6 fps on the native (1920 x 1080) test but the M18x and Leopard 2.0 had scores of 64.4 fps and 55.7 fps, respectively. Its DX10 performance was also quite good but still not on par with the multi-GPU notebooks; the EON17-S scored 41.3 fps on the high quality Crysis test, as did the MSI GT783, while the M18x scored 71.1 fps and the Leopard 2.0 scored 75.8 fps.

The EON17-S lasted an admirable 2 hours and 33 minutes on MobileMark 2007, which is a little more than an hour longer than the M18x and just shy of an hour longer than the Leopard 2.0. The MSI GT70 is the clear battery life leader with a score of 5 hours and 29 minutes.

Conclusion
The Origin EON17-S delivers the fast frames rates and processing power that gamers crave. While not as menacing as Alienware's M17x, the EON's rubbery finish and colorful keyboard lighting give it an edgy look, and its audio output is loud and robust. However, if you're not a big fan of glossy screens you may want to consider spending your $3,500 elsewhere. At the end of the day, if you must have the very best gaming laptop on the block the Alienware M18x is still the king of the hill, but it costs around $1k more than the EON17-S.

Congress passes student loans, highway jobs, flood insurance package; sends measure to Obama

Finding rare political accommodation on the cusp of a holiday recess, Congress passed legislation Friday designed to salvage 2.8 million jobs and shield students from a sharp increase in loan interest rates.

The legislation, which also revamps highway and transit programs and shores up the federal flood insurance program, now goes to the White House for President Barack Obama's signatures.

Lawmakers trying to leave town for a weeklong Fourth of July recess had been facing twin deadlines: Federal highway and transit aid programs and the government's authority to levy federal fuel taxes were expiring Saturday. And interest rates on new student loans were set to double on Sunday.

The burst of legislating came just four months before the November elections, giving lawmakers achievements to show off to voters who have increasingly held Congress in low esteem while the economy continues to flounder.

"We have a bill that will boost this economy. We have a bill that is supported by conservatives and liberals, progressives and moderates. I think it's a great day," said Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., who led Senate negotiations on the transportation portion of the package.

Boxer estimated the bill would save about 1.8 million jobs by keeping aid for highway and transit construction flowing to states and create another 1 million jobs by using federal loan guarantees to leverage private sector investment in infrastructure projects.

Rep. John Mica, R-Fla., chairman of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, said: "Probably millions would have been put out of work if we hadn't acted."

Not all lawmakers were happy.

"At least it's not as bad as our Republican colleagues wanted," complained Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore., who has championed bike and pedestrian programs that the measure would squeeze. "But make no mistake, it is not a bill to be proud of."

In the bargaining that led up to an agreement on the package earlier this week, House Republicans gave up their demands that the bill require approval of the contentious Keystone XL oil pipeline and block federal regulation of toxic waste generated by coal-fired power plants. Democrats gave ground on environmental protections and biking, pedestrian and safety programs.

The bill consolidates various transportation programs and reduces the number of programs by two-thirds. States would have more flexibility on how they spend transportation aid. It also revamps rules on environmental studies of the potential impact of highway projects, with an aim toward cutting in half the time it takes to complete construction projects. And the measure contains an array of safety initiatives, including requirements that would make it more likely passengers would survive a tour bus crash.

"It doesn't have everything," Mica said. But "we were able to do more with less and move transportation for the nation forward."

The bill would spend about $100 billion on federal highway programs over two years, but puts off the politically tricky decision on how to pay for them after that.

The federal 18.4 cent-a-gallon gasoline tax and 24.4 cent-a-gallon diesel tax are no longer enough to pay for current spending on highway and transit programs. And two commissions and an array of private sector experts have said the U.S. should be spending about twice as much or more on its transportation infrastructure as it does now.

But Congress and the White House have refused to discuss raising fuel taxes or an alternative long-term source of money. The federal trust funds that pay for highway and transit programs are forecast to be nearly broke by the time the bill expires.

"When the bill expires we face a high cliff from which the program could fall," said Erich Zimmerman, a policy analyst with Taxpayers for Common Sense.

The fuel taxes are not indexed for inflation and haven't been increased since 1993, so their buying power has steadily eroded. Also, cars and trucks today are more fuel-efficient and the number of miles driven has flattened, resulting in less gas tax revenue. Since 2008, Congress has three times dipped into the national general treasury to borrow a total of $34.5 billion to keep transportation programs going.

Congressional bargainers reached an agreement earlier this week on the $6 billion college loan portion of the bill that would avert a doubling of interest rates beginning Sunday on federal loans to 7.4 million students. The current 3.4 percent interest rate on subsidized Stafford loans would balloon back to 6.8 percent on Sunday under a cost-saving maneuver contained in a 2007 law.

About $20 billion of the measure's cost is paid for by making changes in companies' pension calculations that will reduce their tax deductions, and increasing the payments businesses must make to insure their pension programs.

The bill also extends the federal flood insurance program to protect 5.6 million households and businesses. It addresses a shortfall arising from claims after 2005's Hurricane Katrina by reducing insurance subsidies for vacation homes and allowing for increases in premiums.

The measure also requires that 80 percent of fines for violations of the Clean Water Act as a result of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico will go to a trust fund for Gulf Coast states damaged by the spill.

Google's Nexus 7 tablet outed before IO 2012 update now with specs, price

Well, it looks like the rumors are true. This morning, just ahead of 2012's Google I/O initial keynote, Android Police dug up what looks to be an official press shot of Mountain View's unannounced 7-inch tablet, aptly named the Nexus 7. As opposed to our previous sneak peek, this shot shows what is most assuredly the home screen for Jelly Bean, and comes directly from Google's servers. Glad we got that settled. Now we just need to know about the actual hardware inside -- good thing we've only gotta wait another hour or so to find out.

Update: Hoo, boy! The hits keep comin.' The good golks at Modaco managed to grab screenshots for the sale page of the Nexus 7, replete with screenshots and specs. Turns out, the tablet has a 1280x800 IPS display coated in "scratch-resistant Corning glass," which we presume is of the Gorilla variety, plus a front-facing, 1.2-megapixel camera. Within its 198.5 x 120 x 10.45mm case lies either 8 ($199) or 16GB ($249) of storage, plus 1GB of RAM, and NVIDIA's quad-core Tegra 3 SoC. Connectivity comes courtesy of GPS, Bluetooth, 802.11b/g/n WiFi and Micro USB, plus it's got NFC for all your Android Beaming needs. Rounding things out is a 4325mAh battery and the usual spate of sensors: accelerometer, magnetometer, and a gyroscope. Want more? A video all about Jelly Bean and the new hardware running it awaits after the break, or you can hop on over to the source to order one for yourself.

Wytfliet Atlas, Stolen A Decade Ago From Royal Library Of Sweden, Returned To Owner

NEW YORK -- A rare atlas stolen a decade ago from the Royal Library of Sweden by one of its chief librarians was recovered in New York and given back to its rightful owner.

Swedish and U.S. authorities showed off the 415-year-old Wytfliet Atlas at a news conference Wednesday. The book, created by Cornelius van Wytfliet and containing the earliest maps of the Americas, had been in the Royal Library collection for more than 300 years before it was stolen. There are only eight other copies worldwide, according to the library.

The atlas was one of 56 rare books stolen by Anders Burius, the chief of the Royal Library's manuscript department, and the first of his haul to be located.

Burius stole the books between 1995 and 2004, nearly the entire time of his employment there, and later committed suicide, said Steven Feldman of the New York firm of Herrick, Feinstein LLP, representing the library.

Burius confessed after learning that the library was undertaking an inventory due to suspicions of theft. He was arrested in 2004 and during temporary release from custody, he slit his wrists and cut a gas line to his kitchen stove, sparking an explosion in his Stockholm neighborhood that resulted in about a dozen injuries.

The 1597 book "has been available to the kings and queens of Sweden," said Greger Bergvall, the library's map librarian. "It's important because it's the only copy of the Wytfliet Atlas in Sweden."

The atlas contains 19 maps, including the first printed map of what was then considered California, correctly depicting a peninsula, Bergvall said. Other ancient maps, he said, portrayed California as an island. The peninsula portion is now Mexico's Baja California.

Bergvall said the atlas survived a devastating 1697 fire that destroyed about 18,000 of the library's 23,000 tomes. Today, he said, the library houses approximately 7 million books.

In June 2011, the Royal Library discovered that the atlas was being offered for sale by Arader Galleries. The New York map dealer, who had been unaware of the book's provenance, returned it to Sotheby's in London, where he had purchased it in early 2000. Feldman said Sotheby's, which had bought it from a London rare book dealer, turned it over to the Royal Library on June 15.

Feldman said Burius sold all the books under an alias and rubbed out markings that would identify their provenance.

Officials said they chose to announce the atlas' recovery in New York because it was discovered there.

The investigation into the 55 other missing books is ongoing and is being assisted by the U.S. attorney's office in Manhattan. They include a 1663 edition of John Donne's poems, Joseph Scott's United States gazetteer from 1795 and a 1651 copy of Thomas Hobbes' philosophical masterwork, "Leviathan."

"We have leads on a number of them," Feldman said, adding that all the stolen volumes had been sold through Ketter Kunst, a German auction house.

"They went all over the world from the auction," he said.

Google+ on Android, iPad goes tablet-sized

Google on Android, iPad goes tabletsized

Google+ just got a makeover very recently, but it was still very much oriented towards phones -- that's been solved as of today. The social networking app is now optimized for Android tablets and the iPad, with a whole new navigation system and Hangout video chats suited to bigger screens. The layout is landscape-friendly and, if you have a new iPad, will take advantage of every pixel on that Retina display. Android users can get the update today; iPad owners will have to wait for a release coming "soon." Android phone owners are getting some of the benefits of the supersized interface in their own, more modest screen sizes as well.

Check out our full coverage of Google I/O 2012's opening keynote at our event hub!

Investing In Property In Crows Nest | South Jersey Real Estate Agent

It?s been a risky business during the last number of years? investing in the real estate market as property prices dropping considerably and individuals becoming out of work and struggling to pay their mortgages. Fortunately we seem to be coming from the economic depression and investment into property seems to becoming a safer market.

In Australia everything has been slightly different. Even when other countries were hit by the economic downturn the property market in Australia seemed to remain comparatively stable. Property dropped slightly but unlike the drops seen in other countries like the UK. In some regions, especially those surrounding some of the major towns and cities, prices were even noticed to go up slightly delivering proof that Australian real-estate investments were definitely a safe bet.

Two explanations why the property market remained stable were the limited quantity of property repossessions and tighter lending rules from the banks. Buyers were only permitted to borrow what they could afford as opposed to countries like Spain and the UK Spain where banks lent way over the lender?s means leaving many hundreds of thousands of investors with negative equity and horrendous home loan repayments. Undoubtedly this led to a huge amount of repossessions which impacted the property markets badly.

Even foreign investment has seen a growth with both American, British and Canadian investors taking advantage of Australia?s property market prices. British investors particularly are tempted by lower property prices than that of the UK and are seen to get a lot more for their financial investment.

Through the country all kinds of properties are proving well-liked. From homes to city apartments, there is plenty to choose from and since the recent upgrade of the transport system even more out back real estate have been more desired. Realty agents around the region have hundreds of properties to offer to suit every investors needs and budgets.

Rental properties are as always a safe investment as the place sees an ever increasing quantity of tourists each year. Apartments and condos near to the beach or city facilities can earn owners a good rental income whilst going up in value and when used in the hands of a professional management company can be a excellent financial investment.

Overall Australia is a good investment destination? and features superb property at competitive prices, gorgeous beaches, fabulous forster holiday and great weather? and with the Government making foreign investment relatively straightforward, even over seas buyers can take benefit of a safe realty market. Licensed Portal 2 Turret replica to arrive later this year, leave bullets at home

If an enthusiast-built Portal 2 turret piques your interest, Gaming Heads' Valve-licensed miniature replica may very well force your wallet open. Modeled using Portal 2's in-game assets and cast in "high quality poly-stone," these mini-turrets aim to intimidate intruders with a motion activated light-up eye. In addition to the stoic and silent basic model, the company's offering an exclusive edition, which plays sounds and voice samples from the game. Only 1,100 of these hand-painted facsimiles will be produced (350 with sound, 750 without), but the company notes that other figures based on the adorable death machines are in the works. Pre-orders have already begun, so collectors will want to act fast -- provided they're ready to pony up $300-325, of course.

Officials: NE Congo militants kill 10 in attack

(AP) ? Officials say militants have killed at least 10 people and kidnapped a foreigner in a park in volatile northeastern Congo.

Local administrator Faustin Drakana Kananga said Monday that foreign park workers at a reserve in the Epulu area may have been among the 10 victims of the attack by members of a feared militia.

Guy Mbayma, executive director of the Congolese Institute for Nature Conservation, says the attackers also kidnapped two people including an American working for a wildlife group. He did not give the full name of the American hostage. He also says the attackers raped women.

The giant Central African nation was mired in civil war from 1996-2002, and the east remains awash in weapons and rebel groups who terrorize civilians. Activists say thousands of women have been raped there.
