Music Revenue Grows For The First Time Since 1999 | Stuff.co.nz

More than a decade after online file swapping tipped the music industry into turmoil, record executives may finally be getting a sliver of good news.

Industry revenue is up. A measly 0.3 percent, but it's still up.

"We're on the path to recovery," said Frances Moore, whose International Federation of the Phonographic Industry put together the figures released in a report Tuesday. "There's a palpable buzz in the air."

In her forward to the IFPI report, Moore said the return to growth was a tribute to the transformation of the music industry, saying it had "adapted to the Internet world."

That change has been a long time coming. Online song sharing popularised by services such as Napster at the turn of the millennium seriously destabilised the industry, which reacted with a barrage of lawsuits and lobbying.

But the war on piracy failed to stem the tide of free music, and by the time executives finally began making legal music available through download services such as Apple Inc.'s iTunes, the industry was in a free fall.

Since its 1999 peak, the global music industry's revenues have crashed more than 40 percent. Tuesday's figures, which show a rise in global revenue from US$16.4 billion in 2011 to US$16.5 billion in 2012, are the first hint of growth in more than a decade.

Mark Mulligan, of UK-based Midia consulting, warned that Tuesday's figures did not mean the industry had put its misery years behind it.

"We're probably near the bottom," he said, "but it's so marginal we could easily have another year or two where it could get worse."

The physical music market - everything from vinyl records to DVDs - continues to contract, losing another $500 million in revenue between 2011 and 2012, according to Tuesday's IFPI figures. The industry group has placed its bets on downloads, streaming, and subscription services to make up for lost ground, but there's still a long way to go.

Downloads and streaming audio now account for most of the music sold in the United States and Scandinavia, but physical music still accounts for the majority of industry revenue worldwide.

Illegal music downloads remain a problem worldwide, particularly in potentially huge markets such as Russia, India, and China. Moore urged governments to follow the example of the international enforcement action against Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom, accused by American prosecutors of facilitating millions of illegal downloads. Dotcom, who is fighting an attempt to extradite him from New Zealand to the United States, denies the allegations.

The report hailed the action against Megaupload and sites like The Pirate Bay - which has been blocked by several European countries - but it estimated that 32 percent of all Internet users still regularly downloaded pirated music.

"What other industry has to cope with a third of its customers being able to get copies of its products from illegal services?" Moore said.

With growth uneven across various countries and piracy still a stubborn problem, it could take years for the industry to return to its previous health. If it ever does.

Mulligan said he believes some of the lost revenue may never be recovered, with many casual users who used to buy the odd CD turning to free services such as YouTube, television music channels, or Internet radio instead.

"This is a case of managed decline," he said, predicting "a sustainable but smaller market built around more engaged music fans."

Rethinking wind power

Monday, February 25, 2013

"People have often thought there's no upper bound for wind power?that it's one of the most scalable power sources," says Harvard applied physicist David Keith. After all, gusts and breezes don't seem likely to "run out" on a global scale in the way oil wells might run dry.

Yet the latest research in mesoscale atmospheric modeling, published today in the journal Environmental Research Letters, suggests that the generating capacity of large-scale wind farms has been overestimated.

Each wind turbine creates behind it a "wind shadow" in which the air has been slowed down by drag on the turbine's blades. The ideal wind farm strikes a balance, packing as many turbines onto the land as possible, while also spacing them enough to reduce the impact of these wind shadows. But as wind farms grow larger, they start to interact, and the regional-scale wind patterns matter more.

Keith's research has shown that the generating capacity of very large wind power installations (larger than 100 square kilometers) may peak at between 0.5 and 1 watts per square meter. Previous estimates, which ignored the turbines' slowing effect on the wind, had put that figure at between 2 and 7 watts per square meter.

In short, we may not have access to as much wind power as scientists thought.

An internationally renowned expert on climate science and technology policy, Keith holds appointments as Gordon McKay Professor of Applied Physics at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) and as Professor of Public Policy at Harvard Kennedy School. Coauthor Amanda S. Adams was formerly a postdoctoral fellow with Keith and is now assistant professor of geography and Earth sciences at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

"One of the inherent challenges of wind energy is that as soon as you start to develop wind farms and harvest the resource, you change the resource, making it difficult to assess what's really available," says Adams.

But having a truly accurate estimate matters, of course, in the pursuit of carbon-neutral energy sources. Solar, wind, and hydro power, for example, could all play roles in fulfilling energy needs that are currently met by coal or oil.

"If wind power's going to make a contribution to global energy requirements that's serious, 10 or 20 percent or more, then it really has to contribute on the scale of terawatts in the next half-century or less," says Keith.

If we were to cover the entire Earth with wind farms, he notes, "the system could potentially generate enormous amounts of power, well in excess of 100 terawatts, but at that point my guess, based on our climate modeling, is that the effect of that on global winds, and therefore on climate, would be severe?perhaps bigger than the impact of doubling CO2."

"Our findings don't mean that we shouldn't pursue wind power?wind is much better for the environment than conventional coal?but these geophysical limits may be meaningful if we really want to scale wind power up to supply a third, let's say, of our primary energy," Keith adds.

And the climatic effect of turbine drag is not the only constraint; geography and economics matter too.

"It's clear the theoretical upper limit to wind power is huge, if you don't care about the impacts of covering the whole world with wind turbines," says Keith. "What's not clear?and this is a topic for future research?is what the practical limit to wind power would be if you consider all of the real-world constraints. You'd have to assume that wind turbines need to be located relatively close to where people actually live and where there's a fairly constant wind supply, and that they have to deal with environmental constraints. You can't just put them everywhere."

"The real punch line," he adds, "is that if you can't get much more than half a watt out, and you accept that you can't put them everywhere, then you may start to reach a limit that matters."

In order to stabilize the Earth's climate, Keith estimates, the world will need to identify sources for several tens of terawatts of carbon-free power within a human lifetime. In the meantime, policymakers must also decide how to allocate resources to develop new technologies to harness that energy.

In doing so, Keith says, "It's worth asking about the scalability of each potential energy source?whether it can supply, say, 3 terawatts, which would be 10 percent of our global energy need, or whether it's more like 0.3 terawatts and 1 percent."

"Wind power is in a middle ground," he says. "It is still one of the most scalable renewables, but our research suggests that we will need to pay attention to its limits and climatic impacts if we try to scale it beyond a few terawatts."

Losing zzz?s disrupts daily rhythms at biochemical level

People who don?t get enough sleep tend to experience a wide variety of health problems, but scientists haven?t known why at a molecular level. Now, Derk-Jan Dijk and colleagues at the University of Surrey in England report changes in gene activity in 26 people who had built up a sleep deficit.

For one week the volunteers slept at least eight hours per night. Then, participants were allowed just under six hours of sleep each night for another week. People were sleepy and sluggish after that week, and blood tests showed that the activity of 711 of their genes had changed, the researchers report online February 25 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Among the genes affected by the shift were those that govern the immune system. Some of those genes stopped cycling in a daily, or circadian, pattern. Activity of other genes that don?t usually follow the clock fell into a daily rhythm. The researchers conclude that skimping on sleep can drastically change the body?s daily rhythms and may lead to health problems.

Death toll in Pakistani bombing climbs to 81

QUETTA, Pakistan (AP) ? The death toll from a horrific bombing that tore through a crowded vegetable market in southwestern Pakistan climbed to 81 with many of the severely wounded dying overnight, a Pakistani police official said Sunday.

Police official Fayyaz Saumbal said 164 people also were wounded by the explosion Saturday in the city of Quetta just as people shopped for produce for their evening meal. The bomb was hidden in a water tank and towed into the market by a tractor, Quetta police chief Zubair Mahmood told reporters.

It was the deadliest incident since bombings targeting Shiites in the same city killed 86 people earlier this year, leading to days of protests that eventually toppled the local government.

Shiites have been increasingly attacked by militant groups who view them as heretics and non-Muslims in the country, which is dominated by Sunni Muslims. Many of the Shiites in Quetta, including those in the neighborhood attacked Saturday, are Hazaras, an ethnic group that migrated to Pakistan from Afghanistan more than a century ago.

The blast, which destroyed shops and caused a two-story building to collapse, left a massive crater where it exploded.

Mahmood said police did not yet know who was behind the bombing but a local television station reported that Lashker-e-Jhangvi, a Sunni extremist group that has targeted Shiites in the past, had called to claim responsibility.

Last year was particularly deadly for Shiites in Pakistan. According to Human Rights Watch, more than 400 were killed in targeted attacks across the country. The human rights group said more than 125 were killed in Baluchistan province, most of whom belonged to the Hazara community.

Rights groups have accused the government of not doing enough to protect Shiites in the country.

GRESHAM -- The Oregon Department of Human Services office in Gresham is getting an extreme makeover thanks to the City Bible Church.

Hundreds of church volunteers spiffed up the building Saturday and they'll be back Sunday and Monday too.

Church members said they want to give back to a group of people who do a difficult job.

?I'm going to guess around 10,000 square feet that we have actually gone through and renovated,? said Marc Estes from City Bible Church. ?Everything from the floor up, new carpet, new paint, new furniture, new accessories on the wall, we've done everything.?

Estes said there will be about 3,000 or 4,000 hours put into the project, and about $50,000 worth of donations by the community.

Goodbye Galaxy Games Reveals More Info on Color Commando

Painting a pretty picture

Painting a pretty picture

It's a colourful puzzle-platformer

Goodbye Galaxy Games has been one of the more prominent developers for DSiWare. It's behind titles such as Flipper 2: Flush the Goldfish and Ace Mathician ? which was voted by the humble Nintendo Life staff as the best DSiWare title of 2012.

The developer announced its latest title for DSiWare, the vibrant puzzle-based platformer called Color Commando, last year. It has now released some more information on the upcoming title.

The aim of the game is to hunt for treasure, however several nasty color monsters are stopping you from doing so. To get past these colourful creatures you must collect and use paint blobs scattered about the levels. You use these blobs to paint spots in the world using the touch screen, and should an unsuspecting monster happen to come into contact with a blob that is the same colour, it will dissolve away into the spot, allowing you to pass through unharmed.

Naturally the levels will get more and more taxing as you progress and you'll certainly have to put a lot of thought into some of the puzzles. There are 5 worlds in the game, each with 4 normal levels and 1 star level. As you may have guessed unlocking the star level is done by getting all of the treasure in the other 4 levels.

Goodbye Galaxy Games is hoping to sell Color Commando for around 200 Nintendo Points, and says it should offer the average player around 2 hours of gameplay. The developer says it should be out in early 2013, which means we shouldn't be waiting long.

Hugo Smits, the man behind the game, told us a few months ago that Color Commando was developed in a "spur of the moment" and that it will likely be the last DSiWare game from Goodbye Galaxy Games.

Are you looking forward to this one? Take a look at the new trailer below and let us know what you think in the comments section.

Get out of the House with Free Local Activities

Free Rock Climbing

Guest Post from Daria of Mom in Management

I?m a single mom of 3 kids in Colorado. And like many of you, I look for ways to make ends meet and still have fun with the kids too.

I make a decent salary. But even so, after I pay for preschool, sports fees (ouch!), bus fees, field trips, medical co-pays, a roof over our heads and decent food in our bellies ? there isn?t a whole lot of money left at the end of the month for fun. Not to mention the alimony I pay my ex-husband.

As an aside: Anyone else find it ironic that what I pay for alimony is identical (to the very penny) as I pay for my 5 year old?s daycare?

Since fun is optional, it tends to be last on the priorities in my budget. But honestly, is fun truly optional? Our kids only have one childhood. I want it to include great memories, so rather than bemoan my inability to afford to take us all 4 wheeling or horseback riding, I look for free activities that we can do together.

Heck, even if you have plenty of funds in the bank, saving money while having fun is a win-win no matter what your financial situation may be, right?

I thought I?d share some of the things we take advantage of in our community to start your wheels turning too. I live in the Arvada/Westminster area so the specific links are for programs in that area, but you can look for similar programs near you.

  • Free Concerts and Movies in the Park ? Many recreation centers will sponsor free movies and concerts in the local parks during the summer. Look up the schedule and put it on your calendar.
  • Story Time at the Library - If you have younger kids, the local libraries often have puppet shows, story times and even magic shows periodically.
  • Parks ? If the weather is nice, there is nothing quite like going to a park and throwing a frisbee or football or kicking a soccer ball. Get engaged with your kids and join in. Those slides are fun even at our age!
  • Free Day at the Zoo - Many arts and culture foundations provide free days to give access to families that wouldn?t otherwise be able to afford to take advantage of the existing cultural exhibits in their city.
  • Crafts ? find random things in your house and then get the kids involved in creating something. It doesn?t have to be anything you even use past that day. For example, painting rocks is fun for all and costs next to nothing since most of us have some sort of paint lying around.
  • Free Days at Local Rec Center - The APEX recreation center near my house has a Tryathlon running through March during which they are having free classes to get people interested in signing up for a program. So far my family and I have gone rock climbing, tried our hand at gymnastics, gone ice skating, and learned cheerleading stunts ? all for FREE!

What are some of your budget friendly ways to have fun as a family?

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Be it concert or charity auction, Bruce Springsteen can bring any event to a crescendo.

Springsteen briefly took over auctioneering duties before being honored as MusiCares person of the year Friday night, exhorting the crowd to bid on a signed Fender electric guitar by amping up the deal. The 63-year-old rock 'n' roll star moved the bid north from $60,000 by offering a series of sweeteners.

"That's right, a one-hour guitar lesson with me," Springsteen shouted. "And a ride in my Harley Davidson sidecar. So dig in, one-percenters."

That moved the needle past $150,000. He added eight concert tickets and backstage passes with a bonus tour conducted by Springsteen himself. That pushed it to $200,000, but he wasn't done.

"And a lasagna made by my mother!" he shouted as an in-house camera at the Los Angeles Convention Center cut to his 87-year-old mother Adele Ann Springsteen.

And with an extra $250,000 in the musicians charity's coffers, Springsteen sat down and spent most of the evening in the unusual role of spectator as a string of stars that included Elton John, Neil Young, Sting, Kenny Chesney, John Legend, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, Patti Smith, Jackson Browne took the stage two nights before the Grammy Awards.

"Here's a little secret about Bruce Springsteen: He loves this," host Jon Stewart joked. "There's nothing he'd rather do than come to Los Angeles, put on a suit ... and then have people talking about him like he's dead."

Alabama Shakes kicked things off with "Adam Raised A Cain" and over the course of the evening there were several interesting takes on Springsteen's voluminous 40-year catalog of hits. Natalie Manes, Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite played a stripped down "Atlantic City." Mavis Staples and Zac Brown put a gospel spin on "My City of Ruins." John added a funky backbeat to "Streets of Philadelphia." Kenny Chesney offered an acoustic version of "One Step Up."

Jim James and Tom Morello burned through a scorching version of "The Ghost of Tom Joad" that brought the crowd out of their seats as Morello finished the song with a fiery guitar solo. And Mumford & Sons took it the opposite way, playing a quiet, acoustic version of "I'm On Fire" in the round that had the crowd leaning in.

Legend offered a somber piano version of "Dancing in the Dark" and Young shut down the pre-Springsteen portion of the evening with a "Born in the USA" that included two sign-language interpreters dressed as cheerleaders signing along to the lyrics.

"John Legend made me sound like Gershwin," Springsteen said. "I love that. Neil Young made me sound like the Sex Pistols. I love that. What an evening."

Springsteen spoke of the "miracle of music," the importance of musicians in human culture and making sure everyone is cared for. And he joked that he somehow ended up being honored by MusiCares, a charity that offers financial assistance to musicians in need run by The Recording Academy, after his manager called up Grammys producer Ken Ehrlich to seek a performance slot on the show in a "mercenary publicity move."

In the end, though, he was moved by the evening.

"It's kind of a freaky experience, the whole thing," Springsteen said. "This is the huge Italian wedding Patti (Scialfa) and I never had. It's a huge Bar Mitzvah. I owe each and every one of you. You made me feel like the person of the year. Now give me that damn guitar."

He asked the several thousand attendees to move toward the stage ? "Come on, it's only rock 'n' roll" ? and kicked off his five-song set with his Grammy nominated song "We Take Care Of Our Own." At the end of the night he brought everyone on stage for "Glory Days."
